You and Caroline and Clea are so far ahead of me there. It's true that the one I'm writing now is hugely different from Cuckoo--in settings, characters, events, pacing, everything--so it is taking on a different tone and shape altogether. The themes that move me keep cropping up, insisting on attention, but again, they feel different in their new context. How does one get used to this? I both love it and find it alarming!Kate Maloyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12338350828357415976noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434699491181348092.post-60806926394732353712009-06-19T13:41:42.258-07:002009-06-19T13:41:42.258-07:00Count me in on this, too. I agree with Katharine. Books and story structure gurus are like life rafts. They keep you afloat, but you really have to swim yourself. I actually find it very comforting to know that you have to teach yourself to write each novel. That really is the pleasure of it!Caroline Leavitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14484844774455246231noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8434699491181348092.post-24902525323166044412009-06-19T13:33:22.859-07:002009-06-19T13:33:22.859-07:00I have really enjoyed your blog essays, Kate. I adore those television shows like How It's Made about how they make canned peas or venetian blinds or hubcaps.)

No matter whose class you take or what sort of mentor you might have, or in what books you find useful wisdom, the truth is that in order to write a novel you have to teach yourself how to write that novel. Each time, really. You've never written this particular novel before, and you have to figure out how to do it. Thank you for inviting us inside your process.Katharine Weberhttp://www.katharineweber.comnoreply@blogger.com
